UTB Purple Emperor Survey Group 2004

The Purple Emperor is now on the wing in the UTB area!
It has been seen in numbers in a variety of locations in recent days, despite the dreadful weather.

Matthew Oates, a national authority on the PE carried out a survey of likely/probable PE sites in our area last winter. We plan to survey all these sites in the coming weeks.

Survey  workgroups will meet as follows:

Weekend 24th July:  No organised surveys. Individuals are doing their own thing! Reports indicate that females continue to oviposit. As a consequence the focus has moved to sallow .

Saturday 10th July

Ten members of the group enjoyed the warm sunny conditions that prevailed throughout the morning. A number of likely sites were located but only one Purple Emperor was seen. All 10 brave souls attempted to shelter from the torrential rain that hit the area shortly after noon. The visit had to be curtailed due to the majority being soaked to the skin. We did however make arrangements to reconvene tomorrow to carry on in what we expect to be much better weather conditions. Precise details will appear below later this evening.
