A female Brown Hairstreak was seen at Bernwood Forest on 17th August by David Stevens from Loughborough. It is always a thrill to see this most elusive of British butterflies.
17 Brown Hairstreaks reported seen at Whitecross Green Wood on 27th August via 'Comments Book' on site. Warden reported seeing 10 adults on the same day. These are extraordinary numbers for this species. Yet two days later visitors to the site, despite exhaustive searching, only managed to see 'normal' numbers, i.e. 2 individuals each.
Individuals reported seen at Otmoor 26th August at 2 separate spots, one of these the RSPB Reserve.
1st September - a 2 hour search at Laplands Farm for the Brown Hairstreak by Tom Dunbar brought zero results. A single individual was seen at this site last year.
1st September - a visit to Whitecross Green Wood by Tom Dunbar and Paul Bowyer resulted in 13 sightings! The first sighting took place within minutes of arrival in the carpark. The others were spread throughout the woodland. It was significant that all but one individual was seen, not on the taller more mature hedges, but in the areas where the blackthorn had been cut back resulting in new sucker growth. An enigmatic butterfly, presenting itself in all its glory one day, but hiding itself away the next!
