ASTON ROWANT NNR by

I was delayed at the last minute, having diverted to
Farmoor Reservoir to see a Bonapartes Gull, so arrived to find that the three
regular members had started without me. Such is the problem of having multiple interests.
However, we all soon met. It was a cool morning with a cold easterly wind and only fitful
sunshine, as cloud seemed to be hanging permanently over the escarpment.

We made our way round the bottom of the hill and up the steep
path to the upper car park. On the way we found a brave Speckled Wood holding territory.
No more butterflies were seen until we reached the top of Beacon Hill where the sun shone
for ten minutes in a sheltered corner. Two Green Hairstreaks were tempted out where
previously we have seen double figures. That was all.

I spoke to the wardens at lunch time, saying that because the
weather was poor we had decided not to bother with Bald Hill but they suggested we go to
see the fine display of Early Purple Orchids there. We did so and were not disappointed.
At one members suggestion we then abandoned looking for butterflies and went to
Hartslock to see the Monkey Orchids and were rewarded with the sight of a fine Lady Orchid
as well. One advantage of having multiple interests!
